UK’s top YouTube celebrity on how he’s monetizing his videos

At Tomorrow’s Web, the UK’s first ever Tech conference for teens, I caught up with 18 year-old Charlie McDonnell, also known as charlieissocoollike who is an English teenager and YouTube vlogger from Bath, Somerset.  As of 26 June 2009, Charlie has 155,689 subscribers and 4,511,861 channel views on the site. He is the third most subscribed YouTuber in the United Kingdom and is monetizing his content.

He gave a talk on his story so far and said he didn’t set out to become so well known, it just happened organically, things really started to hot up when he got featured on the UK YouTube front page giving him thousands of viewers. He also said he’s still not making enough money to move out of home yet, but monetizing video is an extremely difficult proposition and Charlie has proven that content is king by creating short, quirky and entertaining videos.

He has become his own brand where he ‘is selling me’, he said. Charlie is definitely one to watch-  He might even like to go into TV presenting someday but having done some TV gigs,  he says he prefers the Internet over TV.  He’s proven the future of online TV in building his own brand, audience and even monetizing – why bother with stuffy, formulated TV Charlie? -Stick to the Internet!
