Stronger together-UK student entrepreneurs join force to stimulate enterprise

Probably picked through the process of elimination as sadly I am one of only a handful of females who set up a business during Uni, I, along with David Langer and Andy Young, founders of GroupSpaces and Lucian Tarnowski of BraveNewTalent did a photo shoot for the  National Consortium of University Entrepreneurs (NACUE) on Tuesday. Set up in March by the ex president of Oxford Entrepreneurs, Victoria Lennox, the consortium aims to empower, connect and represent university enterprise societies and student entrepreneurs to stimulate university enterprise.

Victoria tells me 52 societies are members and they are developing 25 with faculty staff so now all but two universities in the UK have joined NACUE, which also helps companies through the funding process.

The consortium has an impressive number of advisers including Julie Meyer – Founder of Entrepreneur Country & First Tuesday, CEO of Ariadne Capital, and the new Dragon on Dragon’s Den; Doug Richard – Founder & Chairman of Library House, Founder Vice-Chairman of the Cambridge Angels, and Chairman and CEO of Trutap; and, Emmett Kilduff, Founder & CEO of Cmypitch.com

Surprisingly, the consortium is being incubated by the London Metropolitan University’s Accelerator business incubator in East London, which is the first I’d heard of the incubator even though I attended London Met when I set up my business- huff!

Victoria cooked up the idea for NACUE whist talking to her counterpoint at Cambridge university about some of the common problems they faced. Although traditionally the relationship between the two universities has been marked by strong rivalry, they decided to work together. “We realised that we were facing the same challenges,” Lennox told Science|Business.

I’ll let Victoria tell you the rest!

Bet on some footie and make it social, Smarkets.com launches

Last night was the launch party of Smarkets.com ‘a sports betting website that makes punting on your favourite events simple and social,’ says the site.

Founder Jason gave the crowd at the Hub in Kings X, last night a demo – The user interface looks very clean and simple and is far from my image of betting: overweight, greasy men watching the races whilst toking on cigarettes in high street betting shops like William Hill etc.

Although Willam Hill and others are doing betting online, none of the traditional betting companies are going down the social route of connecting and betting with/against your friends, says Jason.

Prior to founding Smarkets, Jason was an application developer at UBS’s Global Asset Management (New York) where he focused on innovative web technologies. Previously, Jason founded internet startup Descipher, a consumer medical website. Jason had previously been an equities trader at Great Point Capital (Chicago).

Founded in 2008, Smarkets has offices in London and Malta. Smarkets is backed by a group of private investors.

The next Mike Butchers, Mark Zuckerbergs and Richard Bransons!

If you want to know who are going to be the next Butchers’, Zuckerbergs’ and Bransons’ you should of attended the Tomorrow’s Web Conference on Saturday. It was incredible how eloquent and  business savvy and speakers were, all still in their mid teens and early twenties. What’s more incredible is the UK’s first ever Tech conference for teens was organized by 17-year-old Grant Bell who is already making a name for himself  as a bright tech entrepreneur in London.

Milo, Jason and I Judging

Milo (right) Jason and I judging on the startup pannel.

I was judging on the startup panel along with The Gadget Show’s Jason Bradbury and TechCrunch’s Milo Yiannopoulos, the quality of pitches were amazing and due to a combination of outstanding pitch, great idea and clever business model we crowned James Proud of GigLocator.com winner.

Here’s a little video with some quick interviews from Jason Branbury, some of the speakers and Milo announcing of the startup pitch winner.

You can check out the full list of the ones to watch here and Spoonfed’s Meg Fitz has done a nice long write up here

Techfluff.TV teaming up with MyFashionLife.com for London Fashion Week

We’re not only about tech here at Techfluff, we will report on anything cool as long as it’s Internet related and you know what? It’s that time of year again for skinny models, air kisses and oversize sunglasses- yes, you guessed it London Fashion Week is nearly here- running from Sept 18 – 22nd and this year it’s the 25th anniversary of London Fashion Week so it’s going to be huge.

Last year we had immense fun with MyFashionLife.com with backstage passes where we got to interview all the designers, models and witness the commotion that takes place right before a show- what a buzz!

Started by the brilliant entrepreneur and journalist Michele Obi, Myfashionlife.com has become one of the UK’s top fashion blogs for fashionistas who know their Gucci from their Armani.

I love how Technology is changing and evolving the fashion industry and love fashion, but admittedly I’m not very fashionable and would rather spend my dosh on MacBooks’ then Mac makeup! So I think the role of presenter this year deserves to go to  a geek in fashion-  someone who is passionate about fashion, knows their brands, designers and models like they know their mum!

Michele and I are thinking of maybe launching a competition or something to find the right person, so watch this space for more info!

Here’s a little video of us backstage last year- ohhhh! so much fun!

UK’s top YouTube celebrity on how he’s monetizing his videos

At Tomorrow’s Web, the UK’s first ever Tech conference for teens, I caught up with 18 year-old Charlie McDonnell, also known as charlieissocoollike who is an English teenager and YouTube vlogger from Bath, Somerset.  As of 26 June 2009, Charlie has 155,689 subscribers and 4,511,861 channel views on the site. He is the third most subscribed YouTuber in the United Kingdom and is monetizing his content.

He gave a talk on his story so far and said he didn’t set out to become so well known, it just happened organically, things really started to hot up when he got featured on the UK YouTube front page giving him thousands of viewers. He also said he’s still not making enough money to move out of home yet, but monetizing video is an extremely difficult proposition and Charlie has proven that content is king by creating short, quirky and entertaining videos.

He has become his own brand where he ‘is selling me’, he said. Charlie is definitely one to watch-  He might even like to go into TV presenting someday but having done some TV gigs,  he says he prefers the Internet over TV.  He’s proven the future of online TV in building his own brand, audience and even monetizing – why bother with stuffy, formulated TV Charlie? -Stick to the Internet!

On how he is monetizing content
