Hermione hosting TheNextWeb Live! 2010! Europe’s hottest tech conference!

Today is the first day of TheNextWeb 2010, We’ve already heard from the co-founder of the World Wide Web Robert Cailliau who was the first person to be unimpressed by my iPad! He’s was a brilliant speaker highlighting the dark side of the web and his concern about data privacy. I asked him if he and Tim Berners Lee knew the web was going to become a mass communications tool when they came up with the concept. He replied by saying that they thought it would be but only within the academic world.

What else can I tell you about TNW2010? Well the venue and stage is lots bigger (and scary) and I am really looking forward to Tim Ferriss’s talk tomorrow on his book The Four Hour Work Week.

Watch Live now: TEDxVolcano London!

Watch live here now!

TechCrunch writes:

Some amazing things are starting to happen with this Icelandic Volcano. (No, I can’t pronounce Eyjafjallajokull yet, but give me time).

After learning that the entire Skoll World Forum on Social Entrepreneurship would be stranded in London till at least Friday, Nathaniel Whittemore and others decided to see if they couldn’t turn this into a cool opportunity. They got in touch with TED and pitched the idea of a “TEDxVolcano” in London.

So on Sunday night (April 18) in London TEDxVolcano will feature June Cohen from TED and a number of other speakers. It’s going to be a pretty impromptu session, obviously, but I have a feeling they will pull it off.

Gumtree: the ‘funtree’ is 10 Years Old reports Superzoomer!

Superzoomer, aka Elkin Gordon Atwell our resident Techfluff.tv Vlogger, recently went to Gumtree HQ to find out all about the site’s revamp after hitting its 10 year milestone this year! Elkin interviewed Steve Green, Gumtree’s Jedi Master TW9 aka Project Manager, about the new changes and how they have used social media channels to listen to their community and give them what they want and what they need when looking for houses, jobs etc He also was very lucky to win a small eeepc net book which is perfect for blogging – so expect to hear from Elkin in the near future!

Also, as a side note, Gumtree’s Community Strategist, Jon Bishop will be speaking at the Social Media in Business Conference on April 21 in London and will be heading up the topic ’1 year of managing the Gumtree community: Lessons learnt’.

Techfluff.tv Reporter: Superzoomer

Location Gumtree London HQ

Interviewed: Steven Green, Project Geezer

Gumtree is now celebrating its 10 year birthday, and after interviewing Steve, Project Geezer, he said that the site was definitely in need of a of a revamp/makeover.

The beta site, which is now live, is a massive evolution for Gumtree as they have attempted to keep the same feeling of continuity throughout the site to enable users to feel comfortable and at ease with the new features that they are now offering. The Gumtree community is unique and geocentric in the use of the site, and a lot of work has gone into enabling social media to be used within Gumtree, which is a continuous process as new technologies emerge. These features enhances the service that Gumtree has to offer, enabling the site to grow and to be of more benefit to the final end user, which is critical to the long term success of Gumtree.

On another note, unlike some other sites who offer similar services to Gumtree, it wishes to contribute more to the Open Source community and are working on ways to implement this within their organisational structure. Steve also told me they also have a few surprises in store for mobile users, too!

The Gumtree Funtree party was an overall success and no I didn’t get ‘gummed!!’

WOW! iPad Users Watch 3 Times More Video Than Web Users

Great article over on nextMedia.com about how iPad users watch 3 times more video than web users, they say:

“Long before the iPad was launched, we posited that it would change the way people consumed video. Well, based on some very (very!) early data from MeFeedia, Apple tablet is already considered an ideal device for watching online video by its users. Despite a limited number of iPads on the market, the device is already coming up big in MeFeedia’s internal stats. Less than a week after launch, the iPad ranks sixth among mobile devices for accessing video through the site and its search engine, behind the iPhone, iPod touch, SymbianOS, Android, and Blackberry. But the actual viewing numbers are the interesting part: according to MeFeedia, iPad users consume two and a half times as many videos as the typical web user and three times as many videos as iPhone users. More importantly, those users spend three times as much time watching video as the typical web user, lending credence to our theory that the device’s form factor hits a sweet spot for personal media consumption.”

You can catch the full article over on their site.

Looks like we’re going to be busy dealing in video here at Techfluff and Newspepper! If you need video content for your site/company please get in touch:) hermioneway@newspepper.com

Think it all happens in Silicon Valley? You’re Wrong! Part 8: WhoSampled.com

WiredUK recently mapped the UK’s technology startups based around London’s answer to Silicon Valley: Old Street’s ‘Silicon Roundabout’.

Sponsored by Kodak and The Next Web, Techfluff.tv decided to delve a little deeper into London’s startup scene and video interview ten of these companies.

This week we meet Nadav Poraz of WhoSampled.com. This recently launched start-up (see our coverage from December) allows users to discover which songs contain which samples of other music. In the video, Nadav discusses how the site has grown almost solely thanks to Google searches, how the service handles moderation of submissions and his plans for future expansion.

The Silicon Roundabout series is filmed on a Kodak Zi8. You can watch previous episodes here.
