As anyone who runs a business knows book keeping is an annoying but essential part to keeping your company accounts up to date. It’s no wonder then that online accounting software that provides time-saving tools for book-keeping and other areas of accounting, is a huge area of growth. We like to support British startups and ClearBooks.co.uk is definitely one which deserves a post here. What’s special about them is they allow you to log in and invite your accountant to join Clear Books so that they can log in and review your accounts, no doubt keeping your accountant’s bill to a minimum.
We made them this promotional video about their clients and their business, including how Clear Books benefits them on a daily basis. In this video, Marble Construction, a construction business, based in Farnborough, talk about how Clear Books have enhanced their growing business.
This Friday and Saturday I’ll be at YouTube’s first ever conference VidCon in LA. It’s a big deal for the YouTube community who are heading to see some of YouTube’s top subscribers talk about their fame and fortune from uploading videos to the site. YouTube now attracts over 2 billion viewers a day and many make video blogging a full time job, getting paid through the YouTube partner program. I’ll be uploading videos from my time there so make sure you come back and check the site for updates!

@ThatGirl_Chloe here. Having explored the digital/tech/startup scene in Melbourne these last couple of months, I thought it was only fair that I acknowledge the top tweeters who have made my internet-addiction days all the better and give these top tweeters recognition!
I was actually inspired to create this list after Alex Moore, co-founder of Snagsta, complied a list of his own London Twitterrati here.
The criteria is loseley based on those who I have connected with here in Melbourne and those who have added little nuggets of gold in my Twitter stream. And, as communities tend go, this list will probably change and evolve, but I just wanted to recognise those who have made an epic contribution to the online and offline digital community.
I also wanted to inspire some healthy competition So the hashtag is #melbtoptweeter
And one last note, today I pass the Techfluff.tv baton to Leila – our official Melbourne correspondent. But, if you are ever in London, please get in touch with me via Twitter @ThatGirl_Chloe – would be great to re-connect/meet!
This month I caught up with the PR Warrior himself, Trevor Young and social media butterfly, Kimberley Lee to chat about the PR, comms and online media space in Melbourne and in Australia.
Trevor, along with his business partner, David Park, founded park young last year and interestingly, former Sydney-sider, Kimberley Lee was essentially recruited via Twitter. Apparently they picked each others’ brains via the micro-blogging platform! This certainly goes to show the benefits of social networking; not only can you listen to your customers, keep tabs on your competitors but you can also find your next superstar employee or employer!
Trevor spoke about the media landscape in Australia; that news is mostly state-by-state led, rather than having several national newspapers. Recently he has seen a huge shift to online, and gave the example of The Herald Sun (circ: 1,000,000 readers per day) – one of Victoria’s major newspapers – which now uses a lot of video to engage their online audience. He also suggested that the modern journalist needs to cross boundaries and equipped themselves with a selection of multimedia tools to keep ahead of the game.
With the launch of the iPad, Trevor predicted that most people will be using the device by multi-tasking, whilst watching TV (rather than a laptop which can sometimes be used more as a business tool), and for the advertising industry, it’s an exciting opportunity to bring a ”call to action” to a product’s website etc or as, Kimberly suggested, ‘Vote to win.’
Kimberley thought ‘the next big thing’ in the comms/brand space will revolved around geo-location and tagging tools for marketing purposes, and with foursquare announcing that it has received $20 Million in funding this week, it’s hard to see that this genre of social media won’t live up to the hype.
With Australia (and Brazil) being crowned top Social Media users in the world this month, Trevor raised an interesting point about blogging. He suggested that this form of social media is blurring into traditional online media, and with the the ability to easily create video, audio, images all together, this will lead to the nicheification (his word, not mine) of the media landscape.
It was great to pick both Trevor and Kimberley’s brains and it was a delight to interview them together. One of my fave quotes from the pair: ”Every brand needs a base. Whether it’s offline or online, they need a group of fans, followers and advocates…And you need to build it, before you need it.”
park young have an event coming up called ‘The Communications Revolution: The Corporation, Social Media & Change’ on Tuesday, July 27. More details here.
