Europe’s Hottest Startups of 2010

Startups excite me, why? Because in what other industry can an idea go from conceptualization to global, dominant force in a few years? Yes I’m talking about the likes of Facebook, Twitter, Google – Companies which are disrupting traditional industry, cutting out the middle men, connecting the world and enabling people to monetize their passions.

Not long ago I was standing outside the Facebook HQ in Palo Alto, looking up at the corporate palace, the plethora of buildings around me thinking ‘wow, less than 6-years-ago this was a startup in Mark Zuckerberg’s bedroom.’ Never before has it been easier or cheaper to get a idea off the ground and the cost in innovation keeps coming down, I believe we are just at the beginning of not only a digital revolution, but also a political and social one too. In the not too distant future anyone with a laptop and WIFI connection will have access to all the world’s education and that will have huge effect on how countries operate and startups are the key to solving problems, driving innovation and change.

From hosting TheNextWeb conference in Amsterdam, reporting on SeedCamp to my company being media partners with Innovate100TechCrunch Europe and covering startups on Techfluff.tv, I’ve been heavily involved in the European Internet and technology industry again this year.

Last year’s list was a little bit non-specific, so this year I’ve decided to pick my top startups, ones that I think have most potential moving forward for 2011. Hope you had a good 2010 and here’s to more startups in 2011.

Think it all happens in Silicon Valley? You’re wrong! series… TechFluff talks to imeveryone.

This week as part of our Think it all happens in Silicon Valley? You’re wrong! series, TechFlufftv speaks to Mike Maccana who’s recently set up confessions site Imeveryone.

It’s a place where you can get stuff off your chest or just have a look at what other people are talking about. Since launching just a few weeks ago at the end of November, imeveryone has had over 70, 000 visits and 1500 posts – which isn’t bad going!

The big question we ask at TechFluff is with the thousands of sites and apps out there – what makes yours DIFFERENT. Mike says they stand out because all posts have to have a picture or video attached and updates are pushed to the top of the page depending on interaction and time posted.

A 7* Conference! Shared Ownership Fractional Summit Abu Dhabi 2010

With the buzz of the F1 Grand Prix final still in the air, Fractional Life hosted the first Shared Ownership Fractional Summit, last month in the breathtaking Yas Hotel, Abu Dhabi. The conference was suitably held in a place where the sky is the limit and the impossible is made to happen. With oversupply issues in UEA and a challenging economy, the market is primed for development. Industry leaders from all over attended, keen to hear how there  is a different way to incorporate timeshare and fractional into their business model to generate sales. UEA is the future, and as myriad brands are eager to tap into this new sphere from a marketing perspective, Fractional Life provided an insight into how to sell effectively to a Muslim audience. The Summit also focussed on a variety of broader areas such as fractional aviation, boats, and Supercar clubs. In this current era of austerity, fractional makes sense. Definitely the conference to watch out for in 2011!

Shouting their mouth off about Social Media and Travel

Last month’s bigmouthmedia Travel Summit proved a hit with all whom attended; from travel companies to market researchers, every angle was covered. Kicking off the day with a great speech from Forrester’s Nate Elliot, bigmouthmedia characteristically executed an engaging, informative insight into how the world of travel and social media are now irrevocably intertwined. The high calibre of speakers was repeatedly praised, with particular interest in a travel blog by Heather Cowper. It gave travel companies some real food for thought on how to tap into the blogger’s perspective in a financially viable way…the view from Altitude 360 wasn’t bad either!

On Cloud 9 – an insight into the future of computing at IT Leaders Forum

The place to be for an insight into the current trends and thoughts of the IT world was last month’s IT Leaders Forum.  The invitation-only community is open to IT leaders with a passion for discussing strategic issues facing their organisations. The forum focussed on commuity building, lifelong learning and personal development. The hot topic of this forum was Cloud computing – how daring are companies to jump in and get involved? Could being too wary leave your company behind? We went along to find out the thoughts of the people attending and to ask the question-why is the forum so valuable?!
