Australia’s answer to Innocent Smoothies, Emma & Tom’s fruit juice success story at Hive Melbourne!

By Bev Wilkinson

The inspiring story of two entrepreneurs embarking into the health juice scene is what packed the first Hive Melbourne event of 2011.

With a vision to crack the Australian fruit juice market- Tom Griffith established smoothie company Emma and Tom’s with his childhood friend Emma Walsh.

Tom says a holiday to the United States gave him the initial idea of packing Australian fridges with natural whole fruit smoothies.

“I knew there was nothing like that in Australia. We were not hardened entrepreneurs where we watched every dollar,” he says. “We worked out what we were and started from scratch, we spent a year making juices and finding people who will back us.”

Tom says when major competitor Nudie launched a year earlier he was determined to make Emma and Tom a better quality product.

“We raced around Melbourne listening to people who loved the concept but they were looking for alternatives that made them look twice, we got quite a few customers quite quickly,” he says.

Tom says they took control by doing their own distribution locally in cafes in Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane.

“I’m happy to go into a shop and sell bottles of juice, I’m happy to be there to develop a relationship,” he says

“We now have over two-thousand customers who are people like us. They are entrepreneurs who know what they want and expect good service.”

Flexing our mind muscles at FLUGers monthly meet up!

This series is sponsored by ClearBooks: Online Accounting to free your time.

is? It’s Flex London Users Group. Read more below!

Flex is a code framework for creating flash swf files. This ever-evolving program has continually added features that allow users to improve their applications.

I’m no flex genius, but it was great to interact with those who are. They had a lot to say about what’s new and interesting about the platform.

This month the meet-up was all about Flash. Speakers focused on the new Open Source Media Framework, as well as some great applications that use this new technology. iwonder is an application that uses this new tool. It’s DJ application available on both desktops and portable tablets such as the android, iphone, and BlackBerry PlayBook.

I had a chance to interview the official organizer, Andrew Martin, as well as other attendees. Check it out below:

What are you most looking forward to at #SMWLDN this week? Here’s what we’re excited about…

This series is sponsored by ClearBooks: Online Accounting to free your time.

This week is Social Media Week. It’s an international event happening across 9 cities around the world.

In London there’s 100 events, seminars and workshops organised by Sam Michel and the rest of the Chinwag team – all in the name of being social.

Best bits we’re looking forward to is the first ever social media football match between Arsenal and Chelsea, social media surgery drop-in sessions and the pop-up farm in Soho - complete with hay bails and a giant cow.

We went along to the VIP opening party in Shoreditch to see what the week has in-store.

Let us know what you’re most looking forward to in the comments below. We’d love to know :-)

Developers with a difference: Kuku do ready-made app prototypes

This series is sponsored by ClearBooks: Online Accounting to free your time.

Having recently secured work with the UK’s National Space Centre, Kuku apps set themselves apart from the developer masses with ready-made prototypes for different types of business.

Categories include apps for brochures, venues and books and businesses simply slot in their own branding. They do custom builds as well.

TechFluff had a chat with Lucy HG and Paul Muston about the interactive museum apps they’ve worked on, what the release of the first iPad only newpaper ‘The Daily’ means for their business and what their favourite apps are.
