Twestival London for homeless charity CentrePoint THIS THURSDAY!

In case you didn’t know Twestival is a Twitter festival – get it?! They happen in cities all around the world and this week it’s happening in London where it started as a small event back in autumn 2008.

The event is raising money for local charity CentrePoint, who support young, vulnerable homeless people in the capital and helps them get their lives back on track.

Previous events have raised thousands for charities like London Childline and Charity Water.

It’s not just for Twitter enthusiasts either. There’s gona be plenty of entertaiment including music from Tres B, jokes from comedian Patrick Monahan and even kareoke.

When is it?

Thursday 24th March, 7pm

Where is it?

The Cape, corner of Wood Street and Love Lane, London EC2V 7JQ

How much is it?

Tickets are £10, with the full amount of the ticket going directly to Centrepoint. That means that by buying a ticket, each person could provide a safe, warm bed for a homeless young person who would otherwise be on the streets.

Who’s gona be there?

Last year’s attendees were a mixture of social media professionals, bloggers, charity supporters and anyone interested in meeting new people in the tech and media industries.

Look out for TechFluffTV cameras too – we’re gona be asking you lot what you love most about Twitter and how it’s changed your lives :-)

Michael shares the truth about how invasive these marketing techniques are, and how concerned we should be in the future. Should we trust these companies?
Along with the targeted advertising, Michael shares with us how companies are spending their time. In most cases, it is more highly valuable to concentrate on maintaining current customers, rather than gaining new ones. It’s important to know your audience, and give them what they want, nothing more.
The most feared question of the night, is advertising really going to disappear, or is it simply going to feel subliminal? To find out, check out the video below!

5 minutes with Tim Lloyd

The next installation of the Social Media Week 5 Minutes With series focuses on Tim Lloyd from the Department of Health. Tim speaks about how the public sector has approached social media. He describes it as “proactive” yet “cautious”. As these organizations have been newly introduced to social media, it is most important for professionals to be properly introduced and taught to use these tools effectively. Further more, offices need better access to these tools in order for them to positively affect the industry.

As for now, Tim believes the public sector should continue to use social media in its’ most basic form: healthy lifestyle tips and weather warnings. Until privacy and safety in social media can be fully understood, it is important not to jump ahead to more sophisticated uses. The key is to use social media in moderation.

If you’re interested in observing or taking part in this ongoing conversation about social media and the public sector, look into Tim’s weekly Wednesday night chats.

No better place to talk about Mobile: Mobile World Congress

This February the Mobile World Congress took place in Barcelona, Spain. Over 50,000 attendees were present at this 3-day event, all of whom enjoyed it very much! This gathering allows all who are interested in Mobile a chance to network and discuss the industry.

More specific events at the Mobile World Congress give individuals with similar niche interests an opportunity to interact with each other. Professionals at the Hot Topics Party addressed and discussed relevant issues in the Mobile industry, most of which are matters generally not spoken about. This open platform event allowed for taboo topics to be accessible and overtly discussed.

It seems as though Mobile leaders agree on one thing, “We need collaboration!” In order for major companies to continue to progress successfully, they must work together! Without this cooperation, the future for these corporations is questionable.

Speakers at this year’s affair revealed information about the Mobile world that may not be shown in the media.

While important topics like the one above were discussed, attendees also got tips on how to be a more successful leader. Check out the video below to discover some useful tidbits of information!

Guests gave great feedback on this event; if you’re interested in Mobile this may be an event worth looking into next year! If the topic doesn’t convince you, the location should!

Sky News’s Adam Boulton shows us their new iPad app

Today Sky News are launching their very first iPad app where users can access bespoke and exclusive content through their tablet on the go.

After being in production for over a year, executive producer of Sky News Online John Jelley said the app is all about choice for the user and depth of news coverage.

Content:

There’s a team of journalists and a dedicated editor creating and sorting content for the app so that users get a unique and more in-depth news experience.

You can view the news stories in a magazine style format or as a time-line, looking at stories chronologically as they broke over the previous 24hours.

You can also watch multiple live feeds streamed straight from the Sky News channels.

Price:

It’s free to Sky subscribers and to everyone else for the first few months. Eventually non-Sky subscribers will be charged a small monthly fee.

What we liked:

Rich content with oodles of extra video, comment and analysis for a truly comprehensive look at a news story. Lots of what is on the app is bespoke and you can browse through related graphics, galleries, graphs and tables.

Being able to keep a video playing whilst browsing through other articles.

It’s intuitive, pretty and very easy to find your way around.

What we weren’t so keen on:

There’s virtually no social element. Sky’s paywall gets in the way of sharing content from the app, so if you like something, you can’t tell others about it.

There are plans to encorporate Sky journalists’ twitter feeds into the app but at present it’s a social media free zone – which kinda sucks in 2011.

___

John Jelley said they are very much seeing this as a first version and will be asking all users for feedback to start work on updates and improvements. If you have suggestions you can send an email to ipadapps@bskyb.com.

From the feedback collected, they’ll decide which platforms to roll out on to next.

There are also plans for UGC when the iPad 2 comes along with it’s front and back facing cameras.
