Inspire Conference Encourages Creativity in Business

The Inspire Conference Event Report from Newspepper on Vimeo.

Deborah Mackay from Newspepper, was at the Inspire Conference in London last week, to see what dozens of speakers from around the world had to say on creativity in entrepreneurship and technology. The speakers focused on how new innovations skyrocketed their own businesses, and how new ideas could, in turn, launch new businesses and new technologies to be just as successful. Attendees had the opportunity to interact with these entrepreneurs and to see what new products and ideas were in development.

Pizza Express and PayPal–Behind the Scenes Exclusive!

Hermione was ready, flip cam in hand, to capture all the behind-the-scenes buzz, at the filming of the official demo video for Pizza Express’ new iPhone app. We talked with Jon Bishop, a representative from PayPal, Inc to find out more about PayPal’s interest in taking it’s business to the ground, allowing more retailers to take payments via PayPal. It looks as though this is the future – no cash or card needed! Payment will soon not only be restricted to online transaction but translated to real life scenarios. The Pizza Express app is a first of it’s kind, allowing customers to solve the real world problem of waiting to pay your bill!  Our sister company Newspepper were filming the exclusive video on behalf of Pizza Express and PayPal, enjoying being part of the revolution of payment!  It was definitely breakfast time,  but it didn’t stop our extra’s chowing down on delicious fresh pizza…ever wondered what happens in Pizza Express at 7am…watch here to find out!

Voice11 challenges and expands social enterprises

Social Enterprise Coalition Voice11 2011 Event Report (Final Cut) from Newspepper on Vimeo.

“We’re trying to find the best twenty five social entrepreneurs that we can find that will help grow to scale. So we’re on a hunt. The search is on for twenty five social entrepreneurs; so we specifically came to Voice to kick off that search.” Jonathan Jenkins, the Director of Ventures for UnLtd was only one of over one thousand attendees and businesspersons who attended Voice11 to celebrate, challenge, and expand the power of social enterprise.

Voice11 was put on by the Social Enterprise Coalition on March 30. Social entrepreneurs are individuals who see the problems in their communities, and work to correct and change social issues, while working towards a larger-scale change. Voice11 connected business owners and social entrepreneurs, and fostered relationships to continue and to expand social enterprise efforts.

A UK first! PizzaExpress releases first iPhone App & you can now pay your bill via PayPal!

PizzaExpress iPhone app Video from Newspepper on Vimeo.

Good news pizza lovers! Today PizzaExpress launched their first iPhone app in the UK. Not only can you view the menu, search for your favourite restaurant and check your MyPizzaExpress account on-the-go, you can now pay for your bill using PayPal!

The app is ideal for those who have limited time, and need to pay quickly and conveniently. No longer will you have to catch your waiter’s eye to pay the bill. You can just simply download the app, and select the ‘Pay my bill’ option, where you will be asked to enter a unique 12 digit code. You will be given an email confirmation of your receipt, and the store will also be notified that your table has paid – so no opportunity to do ‘a runner!’

This is a ”market first” in the industry and a truly groundbreaking app, which shapes the direction of how we will pay for services in the future.

In the video above, Techflufftv’s Hermione Way, and our sister company Newspepper, teamed up with both PizzaExpress & PayPal to give you an chance to view the app in action and an insight as to how the ‘Pay my bill’ feature can take the stress out of some sticky situations…

You can download the app here! Will you be downloading it today?

New recruitment puzzles solved at Talent Puzzle seminar

Talent Puzzle Seminar – Recruitment Mix Effectiveness from Newspepper on Vimeo.

Talent Puzzle hosted a seminar last month on how to improve recruitment efforts, their second seminar this year. The objective was to help human resources directors form a plan that would allow them to hire the best candidates for their companies. One of the focuses of the seminar was on cost effectiveness, such as forgoing the hiring of an under-qualified candidate and leaving a position empty versus hiring someone who may need costly training before being able to complete the job to satisfaction.

Attendees were able to share experiences with each other and discuss the changing world of job recruitment through social media and traditional recruitment methods. Most attendees were pleased to talk with their peers, share new ideas, and form new recruitment models that would benefit their companies.

Data wins at Facebook Developer Garage London

Facebook Developer Garage London May 2011 – event report from Newspepper on Vimeo.

Last month a bunch of eager developers, some PR’s, lots of social gaming addicts and a few marketers (like myself), made their way to Freemason’s Hall for May’s edition of Facebook Developer Garage.

The topic of the night was all about social gaming and more importantly, the data and measurement tools that current businesses and Facebook are using to drive user analysis.   Did I mention they also had pizza and beer on hand?  It was a really fun night full of data, stats, some interesting mining and analytics.

What’s my outtake on it all?  As a friend of mine recently said: “Data is SO the new black.”  For those who aren’t up to date on this season’s top fashion trends, this can be translated into: “Data is more trendy than it ever could be and wins big these days.”  After this event, I couldn’t agree more.

Want to know why?  Check out the event report above!

Also, don’t forget that June’s edition is coming up this week on Wednesday, the 15th and I will definitely be there again, reporting for Newspepper.com.   The topic is mobile and HTML5 and I’m very much looking forward to see you all there.  For information on tickets and timings, check out the FDGL Facebook page.

Blippar: ‘The QR Code Killers’

All the talk from outside the conference hall at this week’s Inspire Conference was about one startup, Blippar. It’s a soon to be launched ‘mobile augmented reality advertising’ app.

I caught up with co-founder Ambarish Mitra to find out what Blippar is all about…

Techfluff.tv at The Inspire Conference – Day 1

Deborah Mackay here for Techfluff.tv. Today I attended Day 1 of Launch48′s The Inspire Conference in London.  Here are a few of my highlights…

Un-muting the web

Alexander Ljung, CEO of SoundCloud launched the conference with the statement ‘sound will have a larger impact that video’. Quite a claim when you consider the popularity of video hosting sites YouTube and Vimeo.

You can listen to my interview with Alexander Ljung using the SoundCloud iPhone app here…

A new generation of problem solvers

Iris Lapinski was another of today’s speakers who really stood out for me. Lapinski is the Director of CDI Europe and Apps for Good. Apps for Good is ‘where young people learn to create apps that change their world’.

What I like about Lapinski and her project is that not only does it get more young people involved in technology and development, it also helps young people identify the problems in their lives and find ways to over come them. And guess what? A lot of the applicants are girls!

Here’s my interview with Iris Lapinski.

The Mighty Eagle

Finally I couldn’t really blog about Day 1 without making note of what seemed to be the ‘headline act’, the ‘Mighty Eagle’ Peter Vesterbacka from Rovio. Even if you’re not familiar with Rovio you will no doubt know one of its biggest sellers, Angry Birds.

The conference room was noticeably fuller for session four. It seemed we all wanted to know what was behind the catapult, and what the future holds for the addictive game.

So what did we find out from the Mighty Eagle?

- There’s more to the Angry Birds story than lost eggs… but he wasn’t going to give everything away!

- The popularity of the game didn’t phase him ‘nobody can be number one forever, but we think we can be number one for a very, very long time.’

- And as for the future? He wants to build on ‘animation power’ after buying an animation studio. Maybe there’s an Angry Birds: The Movie on the cards?

Day 2

I’ll be back at the Inspire Conference tomorrow with the Newspepper camera crew for more coverage and interviews!
