Time line me up baby!! Facebook Developer Garage London f8 2011 – Special

Facebook Developer Garage London f8 2011 special event report from Newspepper on Vimeo.

I was reporting at the Facebook Developers Garage London f8 special – held in the beautiful Glaziers Hall in London Bridge on September 22, 2011 .  FDGL is for all London developers, entrepreneurs and marketing professionals interested in utilising the largest social platform in the world, Facebook.

The atmosphere was buzzing with intrigue as this time we were to watch a live stream of Mark Zuckerburg announcing FB changes in SF.  (http://mashable.com/2011/09/22/facebook-f8-live-video/) .
Rumours and thoughts of what was to be unveiled had been flooding the developers blogasphier.  FB has been busy  prior to the major announcements with adding a real time ticker, revamped friendlist for the organised folk on FB and also a subscribe button which means you can keep your finger on the pulse of those you like.  Reminiscent of twitter but perhaps more powerful?  We shall see.

The predictions at this event varied in the room however not one person I interviewed mentioned the concept of the ”Timeline” which is to be the story of your life (like an online scrapbook).  And to the extent that applications will play an active part in that time line.  This got developers all hot and excited under the collar about its potential. The general consensus was that the ‘’Timeline’’ was a clever idea to view data that previously was stored under older posts.   Basically FB was to become more personal and was utilising old information and presenting this in a format that would be user friendly.  More your own digital scrapbook if you will.  So it will link when you listened to what song, downloaded what application and pictures of the view you had while you ran using your app.  All in a timeline from when you were born.

The further scope of the changes are endless.  And an advertisers/marketers dream.
To conclude, it was a great event hosted by Facebook Developers Garage London.  And with FB’s major announcements it will be interesting to hear at the next FDGL about how the developers have progressed on thoughts regarding integration of FB’s new changes to their work for clients going forward.
The next event will include a special extended presentation with John Haggis from Sheridan Solicitors, talking about Facebook’s privacy policies, Alex Housley from Rummble will talk about social recommendations using the Facebook Graph and collaborative filtering, and Iskandar Najmuddin, Technical Director at Syncapse (formerly Nudge) will give us a bumper-sized rundown on all the latest platform updates in the last three months, including those announced at f8 2011 in late September.

Uni-verse.biz: The brand new site that helps university students save has been launched

Uni-Verse.Biz Launch Brighton (Final Cut) from Newspepper on Vimeo.

Our very own, Sophie Mackaill, attended the launch party for Uni-verse.biz and here is what she found out for us. Uni-verse.biz is a brand new website that is designed specifically to help students plan out their night of fun, find accommodations, and reap the greatest benefits available to them. The site came to be because the CEO and co founder, Jon Nice, realized that their weren’t enough outlets and resources accessible to students for finding good deals and saving money while they attend university. The key aspect of the site is that it is exclusively designed for students in the Brighton area. Matt Hagger, the co founder and investor for Uni-verse.biz said that the city of Brighton is being used as a starting point to test out the website so who knows what the future will hold. Overall the site adds a social media edge to finding events and group discounts and will allow people to post pictures and comments about the locations they have found out about through the website.

Since its launch, Uni-verse.biz, has had hundreds of people sign up and they are already taking advantage of the benefits that it offers from finding out about potential jobs to learning about countless deals ranging from food, hotels, clubs, fashion, and everything in between. Check out the video above and see for yourself what people had to say about the exciting and innovative social media site that they had been waiting for.

The Eurogamer Expo 2011!

Last week I went along to the Eurogamer Expo 2011 to check out all the new releases in the world of video games. Joining me on my trip into the land of the virtual was video game enthusiast and founder of GaBoom.co.uk, Jess Ratcliffe.

The Eurogamer Expo is held over 4 days every year and showcases the exciting new games and virtual masterpieces the video game industry has to offer. Armed with our free t-shirts, posters and toy tank (!), we made our way round the Expo, sampling each new game. The most popular games appeared to be Battlefield 3, Assassins Creed Revelations and Call of Duty Modern Warfare 3, with huge queues forming to play each of these games.

To get the expert opinion on the Eurogamer Expo 2011 I asked Jess a few questions;

1. What were you most looking forward to at the Eurogamer Expo this year?

This year I was most looking forward to Assassin’s Creed: Revelations, which is to be released this November. I’m a big fan of the Assassin’s Creed series and loved Assassin’s Creed: Brotherhood, which was at the Expo last year. I was also looking forward to seeing Battlefield 3 and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 under one roof.

2. What was your favourite game on the day?

My favourite game on the day was Assassin’s Creed: Revelations. I love the story behind the game and the section of the game I got to play was awesome.

3. Which game do you think will be the biggest seller this Christmas?

It’s hard to say! There’s so many great games out this year, which all have a dedicated following, such as FIFA 12 and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3. I think Battlefield 3 will be the big player this Christmas. The trailers for Battlefield are amazing and EA have worked their socks off to raise awareness of the game.

5. Who wins the war between Battlefield 3 and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare in your opinion?

In my opinion, the winner is Battlefield 3. The game looks awesome and for me, it’s a step above Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3. As I mentioned above, the marketing around Battlefield has been so powerful. EA has been really clever with their trailers and teasers for the game.

Thanks Jess!
