Parliament Week Voted a Success!

We all know that democracy affects us- but how? Parliament Week hosted events for people of all ages to learn about the history and function of the House of Parliament from the history of bonfire night for ages 5-11 to a half-day event on how to plan and operate a political campaign.

This was the first time Parliament Week was held. It ran from 31 October to 6 November 2011, not only in London, but throughout the UK, Wales, Scotland, and Northern Ireland. The theme of the week was ‘Stories of Democracy’. Some of the events, such as Hansard Society Young People’s Question Time were geared towards getting the younger generations involved with politics in a fun way. During this time, the youth got to quiz members of Parliament of the events of the day. It was also the first time BBC Question Time was broadcasted from The House of Parliament itself!

Anyone hoping to break into social media was there, as well as experts who have been in the field for ages.

In only three years, Social Media Week has expanded to 21 cities including Los Angeles, Rome, Paris, Berlin, and Hong Kong. It’s a major networking event, as well as a place to discuss how social media has impacted the world, and what the future of it might be.

If you missed out on the events, don’t worry! Catch up on Livestream! They have events from not only London, but from all over the world!

We were able to attend the fabulous closing party, where we caught up with sponsors such as Phil Ryan of 3 Monkeys Communications and Francesca Heath and Lauren Macready of Chinwag, and people who attended events. Check out what they had to say!

Viadeo opens a new office in Africa!

When you think of Casablanca, what comes to mind? Exotic, romantic, and Humphrey Bogart? Now, you can also associate it with Viadeo!

Viadeo have just announced they are opening a second office in Africa (it’s first in Senegal). With a growing GDP, Africa’s emerging market has potential, not only with new members, but also with adding revenue. Morocco especially has a growing number of professionals who will benefit from Viadeo’s professional networking platform.

Viadeo is already a global power. In China, Viadeo is currently bigger than Linkedin! They also have offices across Europe, USA and Latin America. In the PR announcement above, Dan Serfaty, CEO of Viadeo, says that they have confidence in the African market and marks their success on Viadeo’s ability to understand the differing cultures and adapt their business to what the local markets need.

Here’s looking at you, Viadeo!

Sheila Marcelo talks about Care.com launching in UK!

Social networks have evolved from AIM to Myspace and now to Facebook. They connect the world and make things like catching up with old friends and stalking ex-boyfriends easy.

Entrepreneur Sheila Marcelo found a way use this new media technology for the greater good. A mother herself, she realised families need all kinds of help, which led her to create Care.com, a site that connects families who need services such as childcare, senior care, pet care, and house care with caregivers.

With Care.com, you create an in depth profile to explain what exactly your needs or skills are, which ensures the best fit for everyone. Like a Facebook profile, you can upload pictures and videos and send messages to people you think would be best for the service you need.

Care.com also provides background checks, recommendations for caregivers, and a special “Mom force team” who give reviews. It also provides tips for interviewing a possible candidate and other safety tips so you can feel comfortable when you hire a caregiver.

As for Sheila’s advice to women, she says you need to let go of perfection. Nobody can be the perfect mom or the perfect businesswoman and it’s about finding a balance in your life. Her trick is to end the day thinking about three positive things that happened- an exercise she’s now passing on to her children.

I caught up with Sheila when she was visiting London. She spoke to me about the soon-to-be-launch of uk.care.com (please excuse the background music!). Watch the video above to find out more and check out her blog here sheilamarcelo.com!

New study finds that Facebook is worth £2.2bn to the UK economy!

Facebook Initiatives 2012 – Final Cut from Newspepper on Vimeo.

How many hours a day do you spend on Facebook? Why do you sign on? Catching up with friends? Procrastination? Bored at work?

A new study from Deloitte has revealed that Facebook UK injects a size-able £2.2bn into the UK economy and that over 35 000 jobs are supported directly via the platform. No longer is the site used solely for Farmville, fraping and poking, and with over 800million people logging on everyday, it is also one of the best available social media marketing tools to shout about your business!

Facebook has never tried to quantify the platform before, and following these latest findings, Facebook UK has now launched various initiatives to help jump-start our economic climate.

For small companies it’s a way to advertise on a global scale. Through Facebook and its Ad Boost program, small businesses are being given the opportunity to get the word out on their products. The success of businesses such as Farfetch, Morphsuits, and Cake Pop Princess, featured in the promo video above – made by our sister site Newspepper.com, demonstrates the impact Facebook can have on small business.

So, next time your boss catches you on Facebook, you can say you’re just trying to help support the economy!
